New Study Confirms 93 per cent of Canadian Corporate Executives Acknowledge Positive Corporate Culture Maximizes Company Performance
However, far fewer do anything about it
Vancouver, BC (January 18, 2008): The latest study on Canadian corporate culture released by Waterstone Human Capital demonstrates that company leaders are missing an almost guaranteed opportunity to maximize their company performance.
Waterstone interviewed 185 senior Canadian executives and found that they are increasingly aware of the direct correlation between a positive corporate culture and corporate performance. The study states 93 per cent of those interviewed acknowledge the connection, yet 50 per cent do not take stock of culture in their own companies, and almost half (43 per cent) do not have a process for integrating new leaders in their individual cultures.
“The study’s list of top 10 corporate cultures in Canada contained only one local company, which confirms there is a lot of room for improvement here in BC,” says Vancouver-based expert on corporate culture and leadership, Eitan Sharir, President of Dynamic Achievement Group. “It’s a problem around the globe,” Sharir says. “Another recent study of 18,000 employees worldwide by professional services firm Towers Perrin shows that only 21 per cent of employees surveyed feel engaged in their work. It also found companies with larger proportions of engaged employees saw their operating incomes increase 19 per cent, while companies with the lowest percentages showed year-to-year declines of 33 per cent.”
Sharir adds the key is increasing employee engagement through proven methods. “Among them are challenging yourself to provide more interesting work for employees, sharing a common vision, providing regular feedback on what should be changed or improved and considering your employees as more valuable than any other company asset - and letting them know you value them as such. It’s a matter of getting your employees to think about work as ‘what they do’ and a reflection of themselves, not ‘just having a job’.”
